Abstract
Objectives : This study aimed to explore the association between religion, belief in afterlife and depression in elderly living alone.
Methods : A total of 1,660 individuals were surveyed in this study, which is a community-based study of the elderly population. General characteristics, SGDS-K (Korean version of the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form), religiosity and belief in afterlife were surveyed. The data was analyzed by t-test, chi-square test and binary logistic regression.

Results : Among participants, 52.1% had religion and 38.7% had belief in afterlife. Participants who have belief in afterlife were less likely to have depression by binary logistic regression after controlling covariates, whereas religion had no relationship with depression.

Conclusion : This result suggested that belief in afterlife could be a protective factor for depression in elderly living alone, whereas religion was not. This study confirmed the clinical value of the belief in afterlife in elderly living alone which was less studied before.
